The Quiet Miracle of Stepping Outside

Mar 31, 2026

The last few weeks have been a lot. I’m sure you’re feeling it, too.
There hasn’t been much daylight, and it feels like we’ve been living inside a snow globe someone keeps shaking. Cold, ice, snow, power outages — winter is really doing its thing. Life and my mood have both felt very gray.

When I was a kid, my mom insisted we go outside every day.
She meant it. Didn’t matter the weather or the mood.
And yes — I even have a picture of my brother bundled up, sitting on a blanket out in the snow to prove it.
My husband channeled her yesterday.
He insisted we take a walk in the ice and snow — so we bundled up, put the dogs on their leashes, and headed out. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t exactly excited about it. But we went. And by the time we got back, my whole mindset had shifted. Something about the cold air, the crunch of snow, the quiet… it was the reset I needed.
That’s the thing about being outside.
Even for a minute, it does something.
It pulls you out of your head and puts energy back into your soul.
It reminds you to look up at the sky instead of rushing past it.
It gives you one small moment of presence in a season that feels heavy.
So yes, it’s cold. Yes, it’s dark. Yes, winter is taking things seriously.
But maybe that’s exactly why these tiny outdoor moments matter even more right now.
A pause to see there is still color in the winter landscape — red cardinals, green pines, blue jays.
A moment to take a deep breath.
A chance to look up at the sky and notice the clouds or the stars.
We need to spend time in nature to reconnect with our soul and feel the miracle of God’s creation.
I’m committed to doing what my mom taught me years ago — I’ll be spending some time outside every day.
What are some ways you can connect with nature to let it strengthen you?
