Stop Competing with Someone Else's Life
Apr 15, 2026
We all have those days when someone else’s life looks shinier, faster, or more put‑together than ours. But my mother’s old advice hit me again this week - and it changed everything.
My mother had strong opinions. One of them shaped me more than I realized growing up in a time when women were just finding their voice in the workplace.
She used to say:
“You don’t compete in a man’s world by trying to become a man.
You compete by being a better woman.”
In other words:
Don’t turn yourself into something you’re not just because someone else’s life looks amazing.
Sometimes for me, that meant something as simple as wearing bright colors instead of business black.
And lately, I’ve been thinking about how that applies to comparison - mostly because I’ve been struggling with it myself. I forgot my mother’s advice. I needed her voice to remind me.
It’s so easy to look around and feel behind.
Easy to think someone else is doing more, doing better, moving faster.
But here’s the truth:
Your only competition is the person God is shaping you to become.
Not the chick in the office next door.
Not the one whose life looks fantastic.
Just you.
So, here’s my challenge:
Embrace where you are today.
Grow from here.
No comparison needed.
I know you can create an amazing story - one that’s yours and no one else’s.
