Rethinking “You Can Be Anything”
Jun 02, 2026
We don’t become “anything.” We become who God designed us to be. Graduation season is the perfect time to remember that.
It’s graduation time.
Such an exciting season for our high school graduates - and also a little terrifying.
How many times has a graduate been asked,
“So, what are you going to do with your life?”
“What are you going to be?”
We tell young people what we were told- that they can be anything they want to be. Endless choices - and that they need to decide right now.
I think this thought does a disservice.
I’m not sure we can be anything we want to be.
When we’re born, we come pre‑loaded with a personality and a soul. God gives us the gifts He intends for us to use in our life. That doesn’t sound like unlimited choices. It sounds like a calling. A purpose. A personal destiny. An invitation.
We are who God designed us to be.
Our job is not to shape ourselves into someone else or live someone else’s life.
Our job is to discover who we already are - what we stand for – our values. Then become that.
If you’re wired to nurture and care for others, you might become a nurse, a mom, a teacher.
If you’re wired to build, to solve, to encourage, to create - that wiring will show up in whatever path you take.
The gifts God gives us aren’t job‑specific.
They’re identity‑specific.
We won’t find our identity in a vocation.
We bring our identity into our vocation.
How about you?
Are you still following a script the world handed you on graduation day?
I know you were created with purpose. Your gifts are the proof.
Our challenge?
Live one moment today from our gifts, not the worlds’ expectations.
