Earth Day always makes me want to get outside. Truthfully, it’s not just today. Fresh air is a strategy- I am sitting outside right now!

We started the morning with our usual hike — me, my husband, and the hounds. The weather has been beautiful these last few weeks, and now that spring is here, something new shows up every day. Today it was an aroma drifting through the air, invisible to the eye but impossible to miss. Honeysuckle vine.

Later, we took the boat out on the lake. As we moved across the water, I noticed the bright spring green of new leaves along the shoreline and felt the warmth of the sun settling in for the day.

Sunlight is another one of those invisible things. You can’t see it, but you can’t see without it. It warms us, lights our path, turns leaves green, grows our food. We couldn’t survive without it. Artificial light has its place — I like my living room lamp — but it doesn’t nourish anything. It doesn’t change you.

There are so many invisible things in this world.

Light, gravity, air — we must have these to survive.

Love and joy — still invisible — I think we must have these to actually live.

You carry a light that reaches farther than you think. Someone needs it. Keep showing up.

Think about the kind of light you shine on those you lead.

Is it a light shining from your heart that helps them grow and thrive?

Or something artificial that looks good but doesn’t change a thing?

Commit with me to shine a light that grows others.
